Case No. 07e0072

DAVID E. ROBINSON, et al, pro se______________________
Plaintiff
v.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, et al______
Defendants

Exhibit FFF
The Benefits Of Obedience

1. Almost every effort toward reform throughout the history of mankind has been made through organization. Yet over the long period of human history almost every material organization has disappeared after a relatively short period of time.

2. The constant failure to perpetuate any material organization, secular or ecclesiastical, must lead to the conclusion that material organizations cannot be perpetuated; they have within themselves weaknesses which inevitably lead to their self destruction.

3. Mrs. Eddy explained her position in this regard on page 45 of her work, Retrospection and Introspection. "Despite the prosperity of my church, it was learned that material organization has its value and peril, and that organization is requisite only in the earliest periods in Christian history. After this material form of cohesion and fellowship has accomplished its end, continued organization retards spiritual growth, and should be laid off . . ."

4. In the early days of the Movement Mrs. Eddy refused to form a church. Yet faced with the insistent demand of her students for organization she reluctantly formed her church -- a church that could carry her message to the world without the benefit of ecclesiastical organization -- with its activities and branches and provisions for its own termination for obedience to her instructions would compel its dissolution at her passing.

5. Terminating the Mother Church is not difficult at all. It simply means obeying the By-laws whereby nothing real is ever thereby lost.

6. To continue to function under these By-laws is to disobey them contrary to Mrs. Eddy.s intent.

7. Had the Board of Directors obeyed the By-laws as they are written the Board would have been compelled to turn to the Deeds of Trust of 1892, 1903 and 1898 for further guidance. They provide for the continuance of "The First Church of Christ, Scientist," the "Christian Science Board of four Directors," and the "Christian Science Publishing Society," the separate and independent media arm of the Church.

8. Had the organization been operated under the 1892 Deed of Trust, in cooperation with the Manual, the Board would have been shorn of all centralized control over the acts of Christian Scientists in the Field.

9. Not only will this church be released from centralized control, but it will have set a precedent for all other church governments to follow.

10. When Mrs. Eddy formed the Mother Church she reserved for herself control over the acts of its officers and indirectly its members in the Field. She did not, however, pass this control on to any successor.

11. Mrs. Eddy wrote the By-laws in such a way that obedience to her instructions will forever release the individual Christian Scientist from organizational control. Such a sense of organization is unique in the history of the world. Nothing like it has ever been known. It begins and ends with the "Golden Rule."

12. But what will be the effects of obedience?

13. We urge nothing except to obey Mrs. Eddy.s instructions in the Manual and in the Deeds of Trust. To obey the first five By-laws in the Manual will cause the material Mother Church to cease. But as provided in the 1892 Deed of Trust there will remain "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts," with services identical with those now being held.

14. There will be the Christian Science Publishing Society functioning under the 1898 Deed of Trust, and other changes as well, but whatever they may be or wherever they may lead, the first duty of every Christian Scientist is to obey their Leader.s commands.

15. Mrs. Eddy made it easy for us to obey. She left specific instruction in the Manual and in the Deeds of Trust that clearly outline the steps to be taken. These instruction mark a decided change, but this change will not result in the destruction of the organization but will result in an improved organization that will mark a milestone in the history of the world.

16. Evil will not come upon a Cause when its participants obey. "Step by step will those who trust Him" find that "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
